Limited edition, one of 500 Copies, printed on Fabriano Paper in Monotype Van Dijck. Illustrated with 19 Mounted Letter Press Facsimiles of Title pages in Red and Black on Paper closely Simulating those used by Mosher.
This is the printer’s copy, inscribed by Baskin and presented to Stanley Clifford “with the affection of” Leonard Baskin, dated 1967. Clifford started as a hand leather bookbinder at Bennett Book Studio in Manhattan. He came to be respected as one of the finest craftsmen practicing this trade, a reputation that allowed work to follow him to Deer Isle, ME where he and fellow islander Leonard Baskin became close friends, attracted by a mutual interest in the book arts.
Ironically, an unbound copy in 20 signatures. Some staining to rear page and signature spines.

$900.00New York: Knopf, 1948. First Edition. Inscribed to Bill Smith and signed by Hofstadter. While not definitively established, the recipient could be fellow historian William E(rnest) Smith, whose work The Francis Preston Blair Family in Politics is cited by Hostadter as a source and influence on his interpretations on anti-bank views (pages 355-56). Some pencil annotations sprinkled sporadically throughout the book. A very good copy married to later printing dust wrapper.

Historian's First Book with Warm Inscription
The New England Mind in Transition
$400.00New Haven, CT: Yale University Press, 1973. First edition of author’s first book, warmly inscribed to Ellis’ close associates: “For Rik & Margot / Who have had / the dubious privilege to / watch young Ellis in / transition as he wrote / this book. Johnson was no / more indebted to that “School / of the Prophets” than I am / to you” Signed as “Joe Ellis” and dated in the year of publication. A fine copy in near fine dust wrapper with some slight fading to the spine, trifle rubbing to the spine tips, one tiny nick, and a little soiling. Ellis won the Pulitzer Prize in 2001 for his work Founding Brothers, exploring how the interactions between the leading figures of the US Constitutional era profoundly influenced the early development of the Republic. Ellis is also credited with leading a revival of interest in John Adams, a President he viewed as under-appreciated for both his character and achievements. The New England Mind grew out of Ellis’ PhD dissertation at Yale (The Puritan Mind in Transition: The American Samuel Johnson (1696-1772)). While at Yale, Ellis became close friends with Richard “Rik” Warch, a fellow graduate student and then member of the faculty, and his wife Margot. Warch was the author of a history of Yale in the early 18th century, attended by Johnson, and Ellis cites Warch’s doctoral dissertation as “the best secondary account of the intellectual and religious climate at early Yale” in the bibliographical essay of his work. The “School of Prophets” in the inscription refers to the title of Warch’s own book-length treatment of his dissertation (School of Prophets. Yale College, 1701 – 1740 also published by the Yale University Press).

$2,000.00Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1966. First Edition of the co-authors’ first book. Inscribed “with compliments” and signed by both Masters and Johnson. An uncommonly nice copy, externally fine, binding slightly cocked, edges of text block lightly foxed (not affecting internal text), slight tinge of offsetting from front flap, in a fine dust wrapper save for some light edge wear. “After many years of secretly documenting how the human body responds during sex—and coming up with remarkably effective treatments for their patients—Masters and Johnson became suddenly famous with the publication of their first landmark book. In a real sense, Masters and Johnson symbolized the triumph of modernity and medicine over religious taboos and cultural ignorance. Their “facts of life” felt far more definitive than ancient religious screeds or even Freud’s theories. Sex had left the church and entered the clinic. Instead of consulting with black-clad ministers or rabbis, Americans would rely on doctors in crisp white. Roman numeral copies I-XV are bound in full morocco hand-colored by the artist and contain a frontispiece. Lettered copies A-R are for the author and artist. Bindings are by Claudia Cohen; Michael Bixler has set the text in Dante. Each copy has been signed by John Hawkes and T. L. Solien.” Copy XIII of the Roman numeral edition. T. L. Solien’s work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions across the country and is included in public and private collections around the world.
